The Basic oxygen administration first aid course is designed to equip first responders with the skills needed to recognize and respond to emergency situations that require basic oxygen therapy and/or oxygen resuscitation until medical assistance arrives. Here’s an overview of what you’ll learn:

Course Outcomes:

1. Recognition and Response to Emergency Situations:
– Ability to recognize and respond to emergency situations requiring CPR and/or the application of oxygen therapy or oxygen resuscitation.
– Assess the situation considering the casualty, risks, and physical hazards (e.g., poorly ventilated room, naked flame, or potential for spark or flame).
– Take appropriate control of the situation.

2. Administration of Oxygen:
– Appropriately administer oxygen using specified delivery devices.
– Understand the benefits of oxygen in various situations, such as diving incidents.

3. Basic Life Support:
– Learn basic first aid resuscitation techniques.
– Develop skills and knowledge to recognize when someone is unconscious and not breathing normally (Cardiac Arrest).

4. Communication and Documentation:
– Appropriately communicate incident details, including requesting emergency assistance.
– Convey details of the casualty to emergency services and relevant workplace officers.
– Produce appropriate documentation according to established industry/organizational procedures.

Course Contents:

1. Basic Life Support:
– CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).
– Use of a defibrillator.
– Casualty assessment.

2. Oxygen Administration:
– The use of pocket masks.
– Understanding oxygen and its benefits in diving incidents.
– Proper use of oxygen administration equipment.

Certification:

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be issued with the following qualifications:

– Basic O2 Provider Certification
– Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (HLTAID001)

This course will be delivered in the clients workplace or at Respond Right Australia training facility.

Entry Requirements

It is recommended that participants in this course have literacy and numeracy competencies equivalent to the Australian Core Skills Framework Level 2. An example of ACSF Level 2 is being able to request appropriate emergency assistance at the scene of the incident.

Participants in the Course in Basic Oxygen Administration must be able to demonstrate current competence in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines recommend annual refresher training for current competence.

Participants must have the physical capacity to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.

Participants must be physically capable of controlling risks and hazards and appropriately administering oxygen using specified delivery devices.

-Face to Face – 6 hours (minimum) – full face to face course

Refresher training – 5 hours (minimum) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates.

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

  • Performance tasks – The assessor must observe the following performance tasks:
    • Perform CPR on an infant.
  • Practical scenarios – The assessor must observe the following practical scenario:
    • Perform CPR on an adult.
  • Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions. The student must successfully complete all assessment questions.

It is recommended that renewal for this course is undertaken annually (every year).

• Payment Terms – Payment for individual participants is upfront, group booking payment terms are based on an agreement between the client and Respond Right Australia.

No work placement will be required as part of this course.

Assessment Activities

 

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

  • Performance tasks – The assessor must observe the following performance tasks:
    • Perform CPR on an infant
    • Administer oxygen – pre-check procedures and hazards
  • Practical scenarios – The assessor must observe the following practical scenario:
    • Perform CPR on an adult & administer oxygen on recovery
    • Administer supplemental oxygen
  • Documentation – The student must complete the following to the appropriate standard:
    • Incident report form
  • Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
